Instant-decision underwriting in 2026: which products decide on the call, and how to sell to it

Underwriting that took three weeks now takes three minutes on a growing share of products. Here's what that means for how you run a call.
What 'instant decision' really is. The application answers, a prescription check, a motor vehicle check and an identity check, run in real time, against rules the carrier set. Clean case, rules pass, policy issues. A flag on any check kicks the case to a human underwriter and the old timeline.
Where it's common. Simplified-issue final expense, accelerated term at moderate face amounts, and some instant-issue whole life. Fully underwritten large-face term still goes through the full process for most carriers.
How to sell to it. Get the prescription list before you quote, because the check will find it anyway. Have the client's ID handy. Ask the health questions exactly as written. Then say the honest sentence: 'If everything checks, you'll have an answer before we hang up. If something needs a look, it goes to an underwriter and I'll call you when I hear.'
The trap. Treating the instant decision as the only path and abandoning the case when it refers. A referred case is still a case; it just needs the follow-up you'd have done three years ago on every case.
What to tell the client about coverage. Issued on the call means covered as of the effective date on the policy. Referred means not covered yet. Don't blur that; the month-two cancellation is usually a client who thought they were covered and found out otherwise.
