Getting your life insurance license in 2026: the exam, the fingerprints, E&O, and the first contract, in order

The order matters more than people think, because each step waits on the last one and some of them take weeks.

  1. Pre-licensing course. Required hours vary by state. Pick a course with a good practice exam; the practice exam is the product.
  2. The state exam. Schedule it the week you finish the course, while it's fresh. Most agents who fail failed on time, not on knowledge. Life-only or life and health, depending on what you'll sell; health adds a second exam in many states.
  3. Fingerprints and background. Schedule these the same week as the exam. The background check is the slow step and the license doesn't issue without it.
  4. The license application. Filed with the state after the exam and the background clear. Fees vary.
  5. E&O coverage. Bind it before you're appointed with a carrier, because most carriers require proof.
  6. The first contract. With an IMO, agency or carrier. This is where new agents lose years: read the contract level, the advance terms, the release clause and who owns the leads before signing anything. The contracting room has threads on each.
  7. Carrier appointments. Requested through your upline after the contract. Days to weeks per carrier.
  8. Non-resident licenses. Only for the states you'll actually sell in. Each one is a fee and a renewal date to track.

The part nobody tells you. Step six decides your first two years more than steps one through five. Take a week on it.

If you got licensed this year, post how long each step took in your state. That timeline helps the next person more than anything else in this thread.
